NBA Coaching Tactics 2018-19 - February

Oklahoma City Thunder - Slide action

Special play for a corner 3 point shot. Action begins with a staggered screen for 3, who is receiving the ball at the top. Then the inbounder/designated shooter (2), sprints to the opposite corner, while 4 clears out to the opposite corner and 5 relocates to low post area. 3 starts dribbling, faking to improve his angle for a pick from 1 who is sprinting towards him. 1 slips the pick and pops out ("slide") in the gap at the wing area. X2 is forced to rotate to prevent 1's 3p shot, leaving his player open in the corner. 5 should block his defender, in order to make a second rotation impossible.

Milwaukee Bucks - Turnout & Hammer screen action

Play for Bucks' stretch 4, Ersan Ilyasova. He starts the action by clearing out to the corner, while 5 cuts to the elbow. 1 passes the ball to 5 (elbow pitch) and sets a down screen for 4, who rejects it and cuts to the basket. 1 gets the ball via hand-off and drives to the basket, while 5 sets a turnout screen for 4 and 2 a flare screen for 3, giving the ballhandler four passing options.

Miami Heat - Sideline out: slip & lob

Quick side out play based on offensive players' timing and defensive players's idleness. Out of a line formation on the strong side elbow, 3 clears out and 2 curls around and gets the ball at the top. 1 and 4 relocate to wing and corner respectively. 5 moves as to set a screen for 3 coming from the corner , but suddenly slips and cuts to the basket for a lob pass from 1.

Golden State Warriors - Quick hitter: Down screen

One of the many transition actions Warriors run. They swing the ball and 2 runs to the opposite side. 5 clears to strong side corner and 2 relocates to the wing. 1 sets a down screen for 3 and quickly pops out to the wing.

Euroleague Coaching Tactics: Week 23

Fener - Baseline Out: choice & flare

Coach Zeljko Obradovic runs this baseline out play for sharpshooter Luigi Datome. After a flare screen set from 5, 3 gets the ball on the wing, while 1 & 2 flash to the basket. 2 clears out and bigs set an angled choice for 1 (Kostas Sloukas). He gets open at the corner and then starts dribbling towards the wing. This triggers a flare screen for 3. The key is the double gap (top & weak side wing area is empty).

Real: Shuffle Stagger play

Coach Pablo Laso runs this flowing offense play primary for power forward Anthony Randoph and having Sergio Llull running the middle pick n' roll as second option. After 1 has passed the ball to wing, he cuts to strong side corner (sideline triangle entry). Then the ball is swung to the other side and 3 sets a shuffle screen for 4, who cuts strong to the basket and then posts-up. 3 & 5 set a staggered screen for 1 (Llull), who gets the ball at the top. 5 sets a pick n' roll and dives hard to the basket.

Παναθηναϊκός - Horns set: Post-up Iso

A simple and quivk play from coach Rick Pitino, targeting Deshawn Thomas at the low post area. Point guard sets a back screen and then passes the ball to his temmate posting-up from the top (high-low action. 3 sets a flare screen for 1, 5 cuts to opposite low post (for a possible low-low action) and 2 relocates to elbow extended. This movement gives the option to 4 to play 1vs1 (isolation).

Milwaukee Bucks - Ram screen & screen the screener

Simple quick hitter form head coach Mike Budenholzer, with Giannis Antetokounmpo setting a side pick n' roll right after 3's clear out. At the same time, a screen the screener action takes place, getting 2 an open shot from the top, giving the ballhandler (1) two passing options.

Philadelphia 76ers - Elevator play

Quick play for an open 3pointer from head coach Brett Brown. Action starts with 3 getting to the top through a staggered screen. Then, the designated shooter (2), sets a flare screen for 1 and exits to wing area using an elevator screen set by the bigs.

Dallas Mavericks - Fake pick & Wide pin down

Head coach Rick Carlisle runs this play for a 3p shot. 1 passes to wing and sets a back screen for 4, who cuts to the basket and then clears out to weak side corner. 1 gets the ball back from 3, 5 fakes a pick for 1 and sprints to set a wide pin down screen for 3.

Boston Celtics - Hand-off & Down screen/Hand-off to Wing

Head coach Brad Stevens runs this simple play for center Al Horford. 4 sets a down screen for 2, who gets the ball from 1 and immediately passes it back to him via hand-off. 2 then sets a down screen for 5 in order to get him open for a mid-range shot. Action ends with a dribble hand-off to wing area, with this side being empty after 2's clear out.
